Is Cheese Racist?

Let’s cut to the chase… no, of course it’s not. But a spokesman for climate change agitators, Extinction Rebellion, is trying to claim that serving it to someone is some kind of insult!

Now, one of my best friends would be ecstatic at the thought of cheese being cancelled but for entirely different reasons than Alison Plaumer is suggesting.

The discussion came after she started a petition to get local schools to serve plant based meals only to children in an attempt to foster a healthier outlook. Although some might argue the unfairness of removing choice, the action was no doubt well intentioned.

Things did then spiral out of control when, at a meeting with the local Council to debate the issue, Alison said “Arguably, there is a racist element to serving dairy too much because 65 per cent of the world’s population are lactose intolerant, many from the BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) community.”

Where to start?

I fully comprehend the arguments both for and against carnivores that rages these days. Over farming, deforestation, animal cruelty, ethical dilemmas, health concerns, etc. are all entirely valid and merit discussion. The idea that Rosa Parks should have made her stand at a deli counter rather than on a bus is somewhat deluded.

I think Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous speech would be less well remembered today had it been titled “I Have A Brie”.

Having adopted a mostly plant based diet myself recently, I’ve no doubt that it’s a positive step for many reasons but, equally, there must exist tolerance and choice.

By all means be passionate in your arguments and, by all means promote healthier options to your kids, but keep sight of the facts and don’t try to shoehorn something irrelevant into the debate.

I think it’s an extension of a rapidly growing phenomenon whereby people seem to want to be offended at things purely so they can shout about how offended they are. There’s almost an insane rush to be the first to suffer fear and alarm at a new thing, real or invented… often on behalf of someone else who didn’t even know they were supposed to be offended!

Can’t we all just get along?

Incidentally, my mostly plant based diet has helped me lose over 10 kilos in 3 months so I’ll be carrying on with that till I’m confronted by the Dandelions Have Feelings Too brigade.
